According to the Department of Justice, an Iranian national plotted to attack at least two ex-Trump administration officials in what was likely payback for the execution of a famous Iranian general in 2020.
On Wednesday, a federal complaint was unsealed alleging that Shahram Poursafi, 45, of Tehran attempted to hire someone in the United States to assassinate John Bolton, one of former President Trump’s national-security advisers. Mr. Bolton was under observation by agents working for Mr. Poursafi.
A close associate of former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo claims that he was likewise informed that he was a target. It is not named, but Mr. Pompeo is referred to as a “former high-ranking United States Government official from the Trump administration” in the charging document, which describes a second “career” Mr. Poursafi intended to pursue.

The Justice Department has speculated that the attempts were a retaliation for the January 2020 killing of Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps leader Qassem Soleimani by the United States.
Mr. Bolton, a former United Nations ambassador and senior State Department official under President George W. Bush, claimed in an interview that the FBI had called him shortly after Gen. Soleimani’s murder to warn him of a potential assassination attempt. As a matter of course, the FBI issues warnings to American citizens about such dangers.

In September of 2019, Mr. Bolton resigned from his position as National Security Advisor after he and President Trump disagreed on Afghan peace talks and other foreign policy problems. Former congressman and current secretary of state Mike Pompeo served as Trump’s first CIA director for his entire presidency.
Mr. Pompeo was the second-highest-ranking official in the United States government to be named in a report by Axios. Mr. Bolton stated in the interview, “Trump lifted my Secret Service protection the day I quit.” He went on to explain that other governments proactively extend that security for senior individuals who depart from the government.
