In 2016, Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name (Kimi no Na Wa) became the highest-grossing anime film of all time and an award-winning smash in Japan. His notoriety has continued to rise in the years since, and in 2019, with the publication of Weathering With You, he was nominated for Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards.
Fans of Makoto Shinkai’s previous animated films are especially anticipating his upcoming picture, Suzume no Tojimari because he takes his time with each project in the same way. Even though it’s a coming-of-age narrative, Suzume no Tojimari promises a new and thrilling twist.
Fantastical aspects, such as body swapping, weather manipulation, and in this case the prevention of natural disasters in Japan, are common in Shinkai’s films. We can’t wait to see what Shinkai’s newest film brings to the table in terms of gorgeous hues, breathtaking animation, and stories that go beyond the confines of the medium.
Suzume No Tojimari Release Date
The Japanese premiere of Makoto Shinkai’s upcoming film, Suzume no Tojimari, is scheduled for 11 November 2022. A worldwide release date has not been set, but based on the success of similar films like Weathering With You and Your Name, we can definitely make some reasonable assumptions. The press announcement claims that Suzume no Tojimari is only a temporary title, but seeing as the protagonist is named Suzume, it could end up sticking.
When do you think the film might be released in countries other than Japan? The Japanese release date for Weathering With You is July of this year. In January 2020, GKIDS released the film in North America after purchasing the distribution rights. The Japanese theatrical release of Your Name occurred in August of 2016, following its premiere at the Anime Expo in July of that year.
The movie didn’t hit theaters in North America until April 2017, nearly a year after it was made. Thankfully, the time it takes for an anime film to be released in the West has decreased significantly. This is what Suzume no Tojimari fans of Makoto Shinkai’s flicks will be looking for.

Suzume no Tojimari: The Plot
In Suzume, no Tojimari, protagonist Suzume Iwato, a teenager, embarks on a coming-of-age journey across Japan in order to shut doors that, when opened, let calamity and destruction lose. When she runs across a man also in search of these portals, the two of them end up finding one in the Japanese highlands, which almost results in a catastrophe for her community.
A captivating story that, in the form of a road movie set in several locations across Japan, is bound to showcase beautiful landscapes in keeping with Shinkai’s previous work. The trailer also features some of the fantastic music that has become synonymous with Shinkai’s flicks; the score for Suzume no Tojimari is every bit as good as that of Your Name.
Shinkai told io9 that the central theme of Suzume no Tojimari is resolution. A recurrent subject in the film is the necessity of closing doors. However, Shinkai is most interested in conveying meaningful, universal themes through his films. We have no doubt that, like with Shinkai’s previous very intimate stories, the film’s concept will stick with viewers as he intends.
