Springfield Woman Claims Check Taken from Mailbox Was Discovered in Car in New Jersey

MA (WGGB/WSHM) SPRINGFIELD – Before paying your bills via mail, you might want to give it some thought. Following a Springfield woman’s report that one of her checks was stolen from a post office mailbox, Western Mass News is seeking clarification.

Gail Noe recently sent a check to her home insurance provider using a USPS mailbox.

But when two weeks had passed and the business still hadn’t received her payment, she became concerned.

Noe Said, “I Just Assumed It Got Lost in The Mail.”

Prior to the check being cashed, she was able to cancel it with her bank. Until she received an unusual call from a police officer in New Jersey, Noe claimed she didn’t give it a second thought. As Noe pointed out, “He said we found this in a car along with, I presume they had a significant amount of mail in the car and knew they had broken into a mailbox.”

The Ocean Township, NJ Police Department called Springfield Police and reported them they had located some stolen mail, including Noe’s check, according to Western Mass News, who then confirmed the information.

Noe Reported that The New Jersey Police Officers Had Told Her

Noe reported that the New Jersey police officers had told her that the criminals were attempting to use the routing information on her check to access her account. Noe has now chosen to pay her bills through internet banking. She advised other senior citizens, like herself, to learn how to do it.

Find a trustworthy person who can show you better ways to transmit payments without using checks and mailing them to a mailbox, such as a family member, a member of your church, a senior center employee, or a bank employee, said Noe.

The theft of mail has been the subject of numerous reports nationwide as well as in western Massachusetts, and it appears that this is a growing problem. In fact, just over a year ago, the Springfield Police issued a caution advising citizens and businesses to avoid using the USPS blue collection boxes for checking envelopes.

We did contact the US Postal Service about this problem, but we haven’t heard anything yet.
