New Jersey received roughly $169 million in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funds from the EPA to enhance water infrastructure, access clean, safe, and reliable drinking water, strengthen resilience, collect and treat wastewater to protect public health, clean up pollution, and protect key waterways.
“The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law offers a historic opportunity to deliver huge sums of financing over five years for vital water infrastructure projects, particularly in underrepresented communities,” stated EPA Regional Administrator Lisa F. Garcia.
“We are happy to give future Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funds for this vital effort in New Jersey.”
The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law 2022 allocated $169 million to the Clean Water and Drinking Water State Revolving Funds (SRFs).
These monies add roughly $48 million to New Jersey’s Clean Water SRF program in FY 2022.
These funds mostly improve wastewater infrastructure.
In FY 2022, EPA granted New Jersey about $95 million in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding for drinking water infrastructure projects, $31 million for supplemental projects, $48 million to identify and replace lead service lines, and over $17 million to address emerging contaminants like PFAS. Drinking Water SRF receives $12 million in normal financing that year.
Those that have received EPA clearance for their FY 2022 grant programs will get them throughout FY 2023, as will states that will receive awards over the next four years. State programs will distribute grants and loans to communities after grants are received.
Governor Phil Murphy commended the state’s congressional delegation for their vigorous advocacy that secured approximately $169 million in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funds to strengthen the state’s water infrastructure.
“Water systems in New Jersey’s environmental justice communities are now more critical than ever, and this investment will help the state deliver safe, reliable drinking water and resilient wastewater and stormwater management systems for every New Jerseyan,” said Murphy.

Representative Andy Kim said, “I knew that initiatives like these would alter people’s lives and offer them confidence that the water running into their house to drink, shower, brush their teeth, and wash their dishes would be clean and safe.
It would also provide good-paying New Jersey jobs, environmental remediation, flood mitigation in Burlington and Ocean counties, and ecosystem restoration to create healthy animal and marine habitats from the Delaware River to the Jersey Shore.
