James Beard Awards 2022:Chef and Restaurant of The Year Winners of The James Beard Awards!

The James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards are returning to Chicago for the first time since 2019. Just a few weeks after announcing the year’s finalists, the James Beard Foundation announced the winners at a lavish red carpet event at Chicago’s Lyric Opera. Chef Kwame Onwuachi served as host to a throng of chefs, restaurateurs, and other hospitality industry insiders.

During the opening monologue, Onwuachi joked about the Oscars slap and the classic behind-the-scenes cold open. There have been several changes to the James Beard Foundation’s award-judging process since the pandemic-induced hiatus ended in 2020, including an audit and a wider representation on the awards’ selection committees. The categories for this year’s awards are also different from those from years prior to the pandemic, in an effort to be more inclusive.

There’s a new name for this year’s Rising Chef of the Year award: Emerging Chef. Edgar Rico, chef, and co-owner of Nixta Taqueria in Austin, Texas, was named the winner of the award, which is open to anyone. Katie Button’s Crate in Asheville won the Outstanding Hospitality award that has replaced Outstanding Service and now recognizes a restaurant that makes “efforts to provide a sustainable work culture,” as well as public-facing service, in addition to providing excellent food and beverage.

The Outstanding Wine, Spirits, or Beer Professional award will not be given out in 2013. For the sake of recognizing more chefs, the regional categories have been rearranged so that there is more room for nominations in the West, Northeastern, and Southwest Best Chef categories, respectively. The first Best Chef award of the night went to Brandon Jew of Mister Jiu’s in San Francisco, California, for the state of California.

Iliana de la Vega of El Naranjo in Austin later took home the Best Chef award for Texas. Dhamaka by Chintan Pandya won Best New York State Chef, a category dominated by New Yorkers. As a result of the foundation’s efforts to promote diversity, major award categories appear to have benefited as well.

“Thank you for supporting me and thank you for betting on Black,” Mashama Bailey of Savannah’s The Grey said to the crowd after winning Outstanding Chef at the 2016 James Beard Awards.

I write picture books, for middle grade, and young adults, some of which have won prizes, been filmed, or become bestsellers. I've ghostwritten for Pixar and developed teen work for Alloy Entertainment. I think heartfelt writing is the finest. It doesn't have to be personal, but it must be visceral. You want them riveted from the first word, page, or sentence, no matter how painful or unpleasant, and that's my expertise.
