Somewhere around five times, she’s been sick. On the other hand, being a parent often requires adjusting your routine to accommodate an illness.

However, several states including New York, New Jersey, and California have legislation with restrictions, making the United States the only industrialised country that does not provide any paid sick leave.

An all-time high of 104,000 working Americans called in sick in October owing to “childcare concerns,” as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

According to a recent study by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, workers lost $28 billion in salaries between 2020 and 2022. Particularly affected were women, people of colour, and Latinx employees. It also found that those with annual incomes of less than $25,000 were 2.5 times more likely to lack access to paid sick leave than those with annual incomes of $100,000 or more.

The foundation report was co-authored by Mona Shah, an epidemiologist and research director.

The average person who takes a week off work to care for a sick relative or child loses $815 in income, as stated by Shah. That would have far-reaching effects on the cost of necessities including food, shelter, medical care, transportation, and more.

A person’s decision to go to work while being sick or caring for a sick family member, according to Shah, affects more than just that person’s family.

There is a multiplicative effect because “they’re working when they’re unwell, and they’re potentially impacting the individuals that they come across,” Shah added.
