Harriet Tubman, a Pioneer of the Underground Railroad, Has a Monument Dedicated to Her Unveiled in Newark, New Jersey

Newark city officials have prepared a massive memorial to a prominent American abolitionist.

A statue honoring Harriet Tubman has been erected in Newark’s central business district.
This past Thursday, her great-great-great-grandnieces and nephews gathered at Harriet Tubman Square on Broad Street at Washington Place to see the unveiling of the statue honoring their great-great-great-grandaunt.

“It’s phenomenal, it’s emotional, it’s breathtaking, and it’s impressive,” said Michelle Jones-Galvin, a close relative.

“Aunt Harriet has transcended not just to our family but through all of humanity which I love,” said Adrianne Jones-Roderic, a relative.

Washington Park was formally renamed Harriet Tubman Square during the summer.

Officials in Newark decided to erect the huge sculpture as a fitting memorial to Tubman.
Tubman was able to escape slavery and eventually become an important Underground Railroad conductor.

After 2020, the city plans to remove the statue of Christopher Columbus and replace it with a statue of Harriet Tubman.

“We have opted to create a monument that will spur us into a future story of exceptional power and stability, at a time when many cities are opting to tear down statues that restrict the scope of their people’s story.

Newark has erected a memorial to a Black lady who stood just five feet tall but had the presence and force of a giant in a country where the vast majority of monuments are tributes to white men “mayor Baraka stated.

As the city’s mayor put it, “We have established a focal point in the center of our city that represents our participation in a continuous living history of a people who have wrestled through many struggles to steadily lead our nation in its journey towards racial equality.”

The Newark-based audiobook publisher and distributor Audible collaborated with Queen Latifah to create the innovative memorial to the abolitionist.

It’s been about history, legacy, home, and inspiration for our future,” Queen Latifah remarked.
