Derby Winner 2022:In Imperious Performance, Michael Stoute’s Desert Crown Won the Derby!

On the day Epsom Downs remembered its finest jockey, Richard Kingscote rode Desert Crown, the 5-2 favorite, to a Derby victory that was never in doubt from the moment he hit the lead with about two furlongs left to run. Lester Piggott would have been proud.

Sir Michael Stoute didn’t need to rouse his horse to victory from the stands. For his sixth Classic win, Desert Crown’s 76-year-old trainer merely put his top hat up to recognize the occasion and celebrate the advent of a new champion in the stable that took Shergar to Epsom 41 summers ago.

It is true that Stoute has trained many more excellent horses and Classic winners since then, but after his Derby triumph with Workforce 12 years ago, some questioned whether his star was fading. There’s no need for them to speculate anymore.

Training Desert Crown hasn’t been easy; he developed “a few niggles” as he grew into his frame over the winter, according to his trainer. Stoute, as he has done so many times in his 50-year career, was able to overcome a foot ailment earlier in the year and was “just ready” for the Dante Stakes at York last month.

Every Step of The Way, from Start to Finish.

From the beginning to the end, Kingscote delivered. He jumped out of the stalls quickly and settled into fifth or sixth place within a few strides of the lead.

For both the run towards Tattenham Corner and his closing kick, he was in an ideal position from that point onwards.

In 1981, Stoute’s first Derby winner, Shergar, won by a 10-length margin, a record that has stood to this day in the race. A 150-1 outsider named Hoo Ya Mal finished second to Desert Crown, who had a two-and-a-half-length lead going into the stretch, but it was still an impressive win for Desert Crown, who will be short-priced to extend his undefeated streak wherever Stoute sends him next.

This Victory in The Dante Stakes.

After  York, we were confident he may win the Derby,” Stoute remarked, “but the performance delighted me since he had it won a long way out.

“His talent is matched by an even better mind. He didn’t run till the end of last year since he was having little niggles at the beginning of his career. While it wasn’t something major, his growth and development were evident.

The fact that he traveled well, is an excellent athlete, and sailed down the hill made me delighted. Kingscote was getting his second ride in the Derby after beating only one challenger home in 2018. While Stoute is the senior statesman who has seen and done it all before, No obvious pulse racing was seen, which is understandable given that he enjoys riding high-powered motorcycles at 140mph in his spare time.

He Made His Way Down the Slope.

Once he reached the top of the hill and was able to pull one off the fence, Kingscote was overjoyed.

As he descended the hill, he appeared to be in control, and he shifted gears over the road and into high gear as he proceeded. “Even though I arrived a little early, I was still able to lift him.” It just goes to show how much he has going for him that the others couldn’t take him along.

“At the end of the day, he was still going strong, so I may have pushed him a little too much.” I was able to take a breather at the two-pole and let Ryan [Moore, on Stone Age] push on, and he did everything perfectly. [The Dante] wasn’t as push-button today. During the race, he was much more attentive.

Reputation Building for Desert Crown.

Desert Crown’s growing reputation as a rising star will also draw a lot of attention to where he’ll compete next.

On his colt’s possibilities, Stoute gave the typical response and said he will think about it for the next few days. But he believes that he can still produce at 10 and 12 furlongs, so there are a lot of options open to him.

With just three races under his belt, he has the potential to reach new heights. “Shergar was incredibly special and he hasn’t quite reached that level yet,” Stoute said, a few moments after scooping up his prize. He could be on his way, however.
