A Study Found That Air Pollution Was Worse in Two California Communities

LOS ANGELES – Two communities in California have just led a list of the worst places in the United States to live if you want to breathe clean air; nevertheless, are you even surprised by this information?

A model that was developed by academics at institutions including the University of Washington was used in a recent investigation that was published in The Guardian to rank the communities located throughout the contiguous United States that had the worst levels of air pollution.

Bakersfield, which is located in Kern County, was found to have the unhealthiest air quality of any city in the United States. This is primarily attributable to the city’s “unlucky position” in the Central Valley of California, which is approximately 100 miles north of Los Angeles.

According to the findings of the researchers, Kern County has the highest oil output in California and is also well-known for its production of natural gas, mining, and petroleum refining. All of these industries contribute to the county’s poor air quality.

According to The Guardian, the entire region has not been successful in meeting the target set by the Clean Air Act for the majority of the past 25 years.

Compton, Maywood, and Paramount are examples of landlocked neighborhoods in South Los Angeles, which earned them the number two spot on the list. These neighborhoods are flanked on all sides by a network of motorway interchanges, railyards, and warehouses.

According to the data, residents of South Los Angeles breathe in air that is fifty percent more toxic than people who live in the Bel Air district, which is located on the other side of the city.

Despite the fact that the data used in this analysis was collected between 2011 and 2015, researchers found that patterns of pollution tend to remain stable and unaltered over the course of several years.

The Following is a Complete List of the Top Ten Worst Places to Live in the United States if You Want to Breathe Clean Air:

  • Bakersfield and the surrounding area in California
  • Southern California, South Los Angeles
  • The South Side and West Side of Chicago
  • The northernmost part of Indiana
  • Central Indianapolis
  • Houston, Texas Location
  • St. Louis, Missouri
  • Central Pennsylvania
  • Central Atlanta, Georgia
  • Central Birmingham, Alabama

In addition, the researchers concluded that racial identity is a better indicator of exposure to air pollution than one’s level of income.
