SOUTH PLAINFIELD — A 91-year-old woman died after being hit by a resident of a nursing home, who has been charged with reckless manslaughter.
On Friday, Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone announced that 81-year-old Angel Bermontiz has been charged in connection with the death of Clara Sutowski on January 19.
According to Ciccone and South Plainfield police, Bermontiz slapped Sutowski three days prior, causing her to lose her balance and hit her head on the floor at AristaCare at Cedar Oaks.
A staff member had Bermontiz restrained in bed when police arrived.
According to the initial police report, both residents were located on the dementia care unit of the facility.
A 91-year-old man, also from Westfield, died just one day after Sutkowski did, after being attacked by a roommate at a different, unrelated nursing home.
