A New Jersey woman was sentenced to over 13 years in federal prison for her role in a scheme to steal $565,000 in tax return cheques. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey said on Monday that Awilda Henriquez, 36, of Clementon, has been sentenced to three years of supervised release and ordered to pay restitution.

According to the authorities, in 2013, 3,300 fraudulent tax returns were filed using the names and Social Security numbers of Puerto Rican citizens, with the refunds destined for a neighborhood in Pennsauken.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office described tax refund fraud perpetrated using stolen identities as “a widespread sort of fraud committed against the United States government.

” Prosecutors allege that Henriquez and her cohorts bribed postal workers to take checks from customers’ mailboxes and hand them off to “check couriers” who would then cash the stolen checks at local check-cashing establishments.

Workers from the post office, check delivery services, and money service businesses were all financially compensated for their complicity. The messengers cashed the checks with false identification.
