The West Side Story actress took to social media just hours before the star-studded event in New York’s Radio City Music Hall to reflect on her time on Broadway and share a funny recollection with her followers.<\/p>\n

If anything, the song was overstuffed with clever ideas, necessitating at least one further listening to catch them all. When DeBose played Evita, where was LuPone’s reaction shot? In her introductory speech, Debose paid gratitude to Broadway’s understudies, standbys, and swings, as well as the contributions made by LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities this season, in particular.<\/p>\n

Mr. Saturday Night did no favors for the revival with Billy Crystal’s monotonous Borscht Belt singing that does not even approach to match the joy of that musical’s over-the-top marching band antics in The Music Man. On multiple occasions, LuPone and Harper used the now-classic “Chris Harper pays my salary” statement from her take-down of an audience member without a mask to their advantage.<\/p>\n

Tracy Letts, the playwright of The Minutes, provided the night’s most powerful political grandstanding, whether for good or ill. Letts declared plainly, “I hope the audience comes away with the burning desire to stop fascism rising in our country,” during a brilliant filmed piece in which nominated writers expressed, among other things, what they hope spectators take away from their nominated plays.<\/p>\n

To “young Black kids who may not have an excellent relationship with their fathers \u2014 you can do it,” Frost stated in his winning speech. When Frost finished saying that he loved his father and whispered “With love, with love, heal the world,” he added, “Also Dad, I love you.”<\/p>\n

During her acceptance speech, Deirdre O’Connell, who won the Tony Award<\/a> for Best Lead Actress in a Play for her lip-synced performance in Dana H., said, “I’d love for this little prize to be a token for every person who is wondering if I should be trying to make something that could work on Broadway and could win me a Tony Award, or should I make the weird art that is haunting me, that frightens me, that I don’t know how to make, that I don’t know if anyone in the world would be interested in.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
