Tobin, C.Ss.R., led a special mass on April 16 at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark to honor more than 100 couples who were marking their 50th wedding anniversary.

Some couples also celebrated being together for 60, 65, or 70 years. The couples, who came from different parts of New Jersey, held each other’s wedding rings while the Cardinal prayed for God to bless their love and help them grow in the gift of marriage.

Cardinal Tobin said in his homily that he was proud of the couples for choosing to spend the rest of their days together despite the problems that come with any long-term relationship.

He also told them that their faith in each other on their wedding day was a trust in God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, who will continue to guide them on their journey together.

As a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, Cardinal Tobin had a special connection to the couples who were marking their 50th wedding anniversaries, because it had been 50 years since he had taken his own vows.

After the mass, the Cardinal gave each couple a special congratulations and a gold pin with two wedding rings linked together in front of a cross.

The archdiocese’s Office for Family Life Ministry put together the Golden Anniversary Mass. This office helps families’ faith through programs, ministry training, and spiritual projects.

Auxiliary Bishop Gregory J. Studerus will be in charge of the next mass, which will be held on May 7 and honor couples enjoying their 5th and 25th wedding anniversaries.
