An anonymous internet threat to kill the Volusia County sheriff resulted in the arrest of a New Jersey man, the police department announced on Facebook.<\/p>\n

According to reports, Sheriff Mike Chitwood’s recent opposition to a neo-Nazi hate group was the cause of the threat.<\/p>\n

After being detained on Monday at his mother’s residence, Richard Golden, 38, is currently being extradited to Volusia County to answer to a criminal charge.<\/p>\n

During a news conference on Tuesday, the sheriff made the announcement of the man’s arrest while once more “denouncing the nasty and violent speech spreading online among fringe parts of society.”<\/p>\n

The sheriff previously added, “I cannot wait to meet him when he gets off the plane. So I’ll be one of the first people he meets upon entering the Volusia County Jail, the happiest place on earth, to welcome him.<\/p>\n

Golden, who is accused of threatening to harm or murder someone in writing, allegedly made the threat on February 22 in a 4chan chat. Discussions over Chitwood’s response to recent anti-Semitic behaviour in the county were taking place in the chat.<\/p>\n

According to the sheriff’s office, one user who later went by the name Golden posted anonymously, “Just shoot Chitwood in the head and he quits being a problem. A new guy needs to be found to be the issue.<\/p>\n

But shooting Chitwood in the brain permanently solves an urgent problem, he reportedly said. Just kill Chitwood by shooting him in the head.<\/p>\n

The Central Florida Intelligence Exchange alerted authorities to the information, who then initiated an investigation that led to Golden’s identification.<\/p>\n

According to the sheriff’s office, when law enforcement contacted Golden’s mother, she said her son spends all of his time in his room and online. Golden was eventually taken into custody without a hitch.<\/p>\n

South Brunswick Police Chief Raymond Hayducka said in his own statement of the arrest, “The anonymity aspect of the internet may make people feel they can say anything, but if you make threats or put people in fear we will use all our resources to seek you down. Yesterday demonstrated that a distance of 974 miles between law enforcement agencies and the Volusia Sheriff’s Office was not an obstacle.<\/p>\n
