This comes at a time when U.S. families will have only $23 and emergency aid from the federal government will end next month. This action demonstrates New Jersey’s continued dedication to reducing food insecurity by enacting groundbreaking legislation.

Regarding the matter, Governor Murphy stated: “As the federal government’s temporary boost to SNAP benefits ends, we cannot ignore the impact this will have on households and communities across our state, adding, “No one should have to worry about where their next meal is coming from. By instituting a minimum monthly SNAP benefit of $95 for all recipients, New Jersey is the nation’s leader in ensuring that families have the means to continue putting food on the table. While we may be the first state to implement these essential safeguards, I hope we are not the last.”

The implementation of this increased minimum benefit will alleviate the economic situation and end the distribution of emergency rations. For instance, if a New Jersey household is approved for less than $95 per month in SNAP benefits, they will receive the federal match plus a state supplement to meet this new minimum.

“This expansion protects the food security of 45,000 SNAP households,” estimated Assembly Speaker Coughlin, adding, “We know that a better-nourished and more food-secure New Jersey is a stronger state.”

Since January, the Department of Human Services (DHS) and the New Jersey Office of the Food Safety Advocate have conducted an effective public relations campaign. The actions aim to raise awareness of the end of emergency federal allocations and inform the public of the steps taken by the state to guarantee SNAP families a minimum monthly benefit.

In addition, it provides training for frontline staff, community food access organisations, and SNAP navigators, as well as webinars, the distribution of materials in more than 20 languages, and videos in American Sign Language.
