(1010 WINS) – Prosecutors in Brooklyn allege that a man accused his ex-girlfriend of stealing and selling his comic books, so he tied her to a chair and set fire to the flat, killing her.

On Wednesday, 28-year-old Lashawn Duffie appeared in court to be charged on charges of first and second-degree murder, kidnapping in the first degree, and robbery in the second and third degrees.

The judge has scheduled his next hearing for May 3.

Duffie reported that his ex-girlfriend, 40-year-old Sugerys Ramirez, was selling his comic books outside of their Cypress Hills condominium on Livonia Avenue at 12:30 a.m. on November 11, 2022.

After stealing money from Ramirez’s companion, he allegedly proceeded to a nearby bodega and spent it on twine, lighter fluid, and a lighter.

Around 3:50 a.m., prosecutors said, Duffie went back to Ramirez’s residence and assaulted her.

Afterward, he used twine to tie Ramirez to a chair, doused her with lighter fluid, doused the flame with a match, and left Ramirez to burn to death.

After the assault, Duffie was allegedly seen on camera tossing his clothing, a lighter, and some paperwork with her name on it into the garbage.

Firefighters arrived to find the victim’s burnt body. The city’s chief medical examiner ruled that she was killed and burned severely before she died.

The alleged murder of an innocent woman by this defendant is “brutal and absolutely pointless,” as the Brooklyn district attorney Eric Gonzalez put it.

If found guilty of all charges, Duffie may spend the rest of his life behind bars without the chance of release.
