Fire Chief Steven McGill of Jersey City is retiring next week after more than three decades on the job. He rose through the ranks of the department to his current position.<\/p>\n

After 59-year-old McGill’s last day at the end of the month, Deputy Chief Henry DiGuilio is expected to assume the role of acting fire chief.<\/p>\n

“When I first started as a firefighter in 1987, I never anticipated that three and a half decades later I would retire as chief of the top municipal fire department in New Jersey,” McGill said in a statement.<\/p>\n

My family’s unwavering support throughout the years has allowed me to build a successful career in the city where I spent my formative years.<\/p>\n

In 2018, McGill was appointed to the position of chief after serving in the previous roles of deputy chief, battalion chief, assistant fire director, and department liaison to the city’s Office of Emergency Management.<\/p>\n

In 2018, DiGuilio also received a promotion, this time to the position of deputy’s head for planning and budget.<\/p>\n

In the last five years, especially with Chief McGill at the helm, Mayor Steven Fulop has seen a significant increase in both the size and caliber of the city’s fire department.
