Ocean City’s mayor is urging state and federal officials to halt the construction of offshore wind farms.<\/p>\n

All of this is due to an increase in the number of dead whales washing ashore in Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Virginia.<\/p>\n

At least ten humpback whales have perished so far on the East Coast in 2023, including one on Assateague Island in January.<\/p>\n

However, NOAA officials assert there is no evidence that the whale deaths are caused by offshore wind turbines.<\/p>\n

Even still, Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan continues to advocate for a delay.<\/p>\n

It is concerning that there has been an uptick in similar instances in the Mid-Atlantic region, as stated by Mayor Meehan. “This is something out of the ordinary and quite alarming.”<\/p>\n

Mayor Meehan stated to WJZ that he is not opposed to renewable energy, but he wants to ensure that these projects are done in a manner that protects our environment and wildlife.<\/p>\n

Meehan joins 12 other New Jersey shore mayors in calling for an end to offshore wind development.<\/p>\n
