Before this month’s federal emergency funding runs out, New Jersey will increase the amount it gives to help food-insecure families pay for groceries.<\/p>\n

The minimum monthly SNAP (food stamps) benefit payment has increased from $50 to $95, thanks to a law signed by Gov. Phil Murphy.<\/p>\n

Murphy has stated that the new program will combat food insecurity by offsetting the increased cost of food and groceries that has occurred since the outbreak of the pandemic.<\/p>\n

Many families who had never before needed state benefits found themselves in a position where they needed a little or maybe even more extra help due to the challenges of the past few years, Murphy said.<\/p>\n

In March 2020, the federal government provided aid to those who needed SNAP “to offer a temporary boost.” Murphy said the new program is not meant to completely replace the federal benefits that have been cut, but rather to provide supplementary aid.<\/p>\n

When the federal emergency allotment is no longer provided after this month, this increase will help ease the financial burden for thousands of families. Murphy asserted that the monetary boost would “continue to support those families most in need.”<\/p>\n

The number of people in New Jersey who receive SNAP benefits is close to 770,000, as reported by DHS.<\/p>\n

The department has stated its intent to use state funds to promote knowledge of the benefits increase.<\/p>\n
