The NEWARK, NJ – This week, the Department of Justice arrested two individuals in New Jersey on charges of trafficking cocaine and fentanyl.<\/p>\n

Two individuals in New Jersey have been charged with distribution-level possession of one kilo of cocaine and 100 kilos of fentanyl<\/strong>, according to U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger.<\/p>\n

Hector Martinez, 31, of North Bergen, and Carlos Ovidio Gonzalez, 35, of Newark, have been charged with conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute cocaine and fentanyl.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Gonzalez is facing one count of being a convicted felon in possession of three weapons and ammunition.<\/p>\n

After their initial hearing via videoconference on December 20, 2022, U.S. Magistrate Judge Jessica S. Allen ordered that the two be held pending further proceedings.<\/p>\n

According to the court filings, on December 19, 2022<\/strong>, Gonzalez and Martinez were detained shortly after they arrived at a prearranged site in Kearny to distribute around a kilogram of cocaine and 100 grams of fentanyl.<\/p>\n

After their arrests, police searched Gonzalez’s home and apartment. They discovered what they believed to be heroin, cocaine, oxycodone, and Xanax in addition to two loaded weapons, an unloaded firearm, ammunition, and drug packaging supplies.<\/p>\n

The defendant has an extensive criminal history dating back to 2009 when the Morris County Superior Court found him guilty of first-degree drug distribution, second-degree weapons possession during a controlled substance offense, and second-degree firearm possession for an unlawful purpose. In 2009, he received a life sentence for his crime.<\/p>\n

The minimum term for possession with intent to distribute cocaine and fentanyl is five years in jail, with a maximum sentence of forty years and a fine of up to $5 million possible. The maximum penalty for a convicted felon possessing a firearm is 15 years in jail and a 0,000 fine.
