TRENTON, NJ \u2014 The New Jersey Senate Judiciary Committee is going to debate a bill the following week that would put an end to a predatory towing practice in the state during the epidemic of auto thefts that has been plaguing the state.<\/p>\n

On Monday, the committee will consider a bill that would prohibit tow truck companies from requiring the owner of a stolen vehicle to pay a fee to release the vehicle from a storage facility.

The bill is sponsored by Democrat Vin Gopal of Monmouth County, and it would prohibit tow truck companies from doing so.<\/p>\n

The “Predatory Towing Prevention Act” would be amended by this bill to prohibit towing companies from charging fees to the owner of a stolen motor vehicle as long as the owner provides a copy of the stolen vehicle police report to the towing company.<\/p>\n

This provision would only apply if the owner provided a copy of the report to the towing company.<\/p>\n
