K-12 district officials claimed in their announcement of new recruits last week that the number of open teaching positions “would have been over 80%<\/strong> higher without the pre-employment agreements.”<\/p>\n

Paterson Schools Superintendent Eileen F. Shafer remarked, “The data is clear that the pre-employment agreements have been beneficial in hiring excellent teachers to Paterson Public Schools and helping us reduce the number of our openings.”<\/p>\n

John McEntee, president of the teachers’ union in Paterson, did not return a call seeking comment.<\/p>\n

Some school districts around the country are offering bonuses to new and returning public school teachers as a way to offset staffing shortages brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

Most bonuses were between $1,000<\/strong> and $5,000<\/strong>, according to a survey conducted by Education Week in February, and were funded by federal relief monies in response to the global pandemic.<\/p>\n

The city of Paterson is paying for the incentives out of its share of the federal Elementary and Secondary School Crisis Aid budget.<\/p>\n

On November 23rd, in Washington, DC, Mayor Muriel Bowser and city education officials announced a tentative contract agreement that included a 4% retention bonus.<\/p>\n

Taos, New Mexico’s school district announced a $10,000<\/strong> “recruitment incentive” in July, and as of last Friday, its website still listed 17 unfilled teaching positions. The incentive will be distributed over the course of four semesters, once each term has ended.

Jackson Public Schools in Michigan announced in March that they would be giving out awards of up to $10,000, to be distributed over the course of three years.<\/p>\n

It appears that Paterson is the second significant school system in New Jersey to offer bonuses to new teachers this academic year.<\/p>\n

Teachers hired in “important areas” such as math, science, special education, bilingual education, and English as a second language will be offered $4,000 signing incentives, as announced by the Newark school system in June.<\/p>\n

The largest school system in the state, Newark, has started rewarding employees with $1,000 for referring qualified candidates to teach there.<\/p>\n

Paterson school officials have previously stated that in order to get the $7,500<\/strong> bonus, teachers must remain employed with the district for a minimum of two years.<\/p>\n
