Bill S-3114 is looking into lifting the prohibition on plastic shopping bags and bringing them back into the Garden State. Instead of directly contesting the ban on plastic shopping bags, the bill seeks to get it extended for a set period of time. Voting on the original bill didn’t happen until 2020, and it wasn’t fully implemented until May 2022.

Many people in New Jersey are finding it challenging to adapt to the changes brought about by recent legislation, and this may be why. As stated in Senate Bill 3114, this legislation seeks to allow “packaging options, for certain grocery orders for three years;

requires [a] program for disposition of reusable bags; extends [the] timeframe for use of certain bags by food banks and pantries.” Food banks, homeless shelters, internet consumers,

and some companies have all felt the effects of the decline in available plastic bags since their elimination from New Jersey stores and shopping malls in May of 2022. There were numerous ways in which their lives were reliant on plastic bags.

The bill argues that they need plastic bags reinstated, if only temporarily, for sanitary reasons. There are over a thousand grocery stores in New Jersey, and Linda Doherty, as president of the New Jersey Food Council, is responsible for overseeing all of them.
