Mellencamp claimed that three of the album’s songs\u2014”Hurts So Good,” “Hand to Hold on To,” and “Jack and Diane”\u2014were “hated” by the record label yet went on to become top-10 singles. The good news was that they never troubled me again, according to Mellencamp. Early on, according to Mellencamp, he attempted to direct his songs, but he discovered that, like when painting, it was preferable to not second-guess yourself.<\/p>\n
