Brunson’s television show, Abbott Elementary, has earned millions of followers and nearly universal acclaim from critics. This sitcom has gone on to become one of ABC’s biggest blockbusters since Modern Family.

Using the mockumentary technique popularised by NBC’s The Office, the series tells the story of a group of administrators and educators who work in a public elementary school in West Philadelphia. Abbott Elementary’s success stems from its superb ensemble and inventive use of the whimsical filmmaking method. Abbott Elementary’s practical and realistic approach to its narrative distinguishes the show, despite the fact that its sitcom structure is practically as old as television itself. The show’s realism is enhanced by a personal link – Brunson‘s mother taught in Philadelphia public schools for 40 years, giving it a more authentic feel.

Abbott Elementary is a workplace comedy in the style of a mockumentary that follows a group of teachers, their quirky principal, and the endearing students they teach at an underfunded, primarily Black elementary school in Philadelphia. Conditions are poor, as is typical in public institutions, and just a few teachers stay for more than two years.

Only two instructors out of twenty survived the first year: history teacher Jacob Hill and second-grade teacher Janine Teagues. Barbara Howard, a seasoned kindergarten teacher, Melissa Schemmenti, another second-grade teacher, the witty tone-deaf principal Ava Coleman, and Gregory Eddie, a replacement teacher, join them.

Season 2 will presumably build on the arcs established in Season 1. Janine and Tariq broke up in Season 1’s finale. Season 2 will focus on Janine’s struggle to uncover her true self as an individual and grownup who is single for the first time. The next season will focus on Janine and Gregory’s relationship.

Brunson said Janine hasn’t been single in ten years and this is the first time she’s free to discover herself, so dating Gregory may not be possible. Gregory must also accept his decision to teach full-time at Abbott. These two characters are currently growing up, and we’ll continue to see them cross paths in the second season.

Except for Mr. Johnson, the school’s janitor and imaginary life coach, William Stanford Davis (Snowpiercer) will be a series regular for season 2.

Quinta Brunson’s A Black Lady Sketch Show will play second-grade teacher Janine Teagues. Janelle James (Black Monday) returns as Ava Coleman. Lisa Ann Walter (My Wildest Dreams) will play second-grade teacher Melissa Schemmenti.

Tyler James Williams (Whiskey Cavalier) plays Gregory Eddie, the substitute-turned-full-time teacher, Sheryl Lee Ralph (Criminal Minds) plays Barbara Howard, the experienced kindergarten teacher, and Chris Perfetti (In the Dark) plays Jacob Hill, the history teacher who backs Janine’s plans for the school.

Except for Mr. Johnson, the school’s janitor and fake life coach, played by William Stanford Davis (Snowpiercer), who will become a series regular in season 2, the Abbott Elementary main cast will remain mostly unchanged from season one. Quinta Brunson (A Black Lady Sketch Show) will reprise her role as Janine Teagues, the eager and happy second-grade teacher. Janelle James (Black Monday) will reprise her role as the eccentric principal Ava Coleman. Lisa Ann Walter (My Wildest Dreams) will play Melissa Schemmenti, a second-grade teacher with “connections” to supplies and services throughout the city.
