His mother then married an English merchant sailor by the name of Allan Reeve, whom Scully came to think of as his father.\u00a0 Scully studied at Fordham Preparatory School in the Bronx.<\/p>\n

Scully spent two years in the Navy before pursuing an English degree at Fordham University, where he worked as a student broadcaster and journalist.<\/p>\n

While at Fordham, he worked as the assistant sports editor for Volume 28 of The Fordham Ram and was instrumental in the establishment of the FM radio station WFUV<\/a> (which annually bestows the Vin Scully Lifetime Achievement Award).<\/p>\n

He was a member of a barbershop quartet, played center field for the Fordham Rams baseball team (number 17), called radio broadcasts for Rams baseball, football, and basketball, graduated, and wrote around 150 letters to stations across the East Coast during his senior year as a Ram. The Washington, DC station WTOP, an affiliate of CBS Radio, hired him as a fill-in after he received only one answer.<\/p>\n
