Daigrepont, Bruce Fais Do Do, a Cajun band Stage time: 1:45 \u2013 2:45 p.m.
\nBruce Daigrepont, a cajun zydeco superstar, has been performing around the Crescent City for decades (including hosting a popular weekly cajun dance party) at the Maple Leaf Bar before becoming Tipitina’s all-time performance king. The famed accordionist blazed through the noon performance under the Louisiana heat, singing songs like the Tickfaw River’s famous Prop Stop pub, which can only be accessed by boat, crawfish, and life on the bayou, you know, cajun things, while accompanied by his wife on washboard and spoons. Many of his passionate pupils were positioned in front of her stage left, one of those homely small moments you’d only see at the Fairgrounds. His wife is a longstanding teacher at an all-girls private school. Daigrepont, an older statesman of the south Louisiana music scene, is a must-see for zydeco fans, and he’s put in his 10,000 hours (and then some) on stage, probably more than once.<\/p>\n

Gospel, Dottie Peoples 3:55 p.m. \u2013 4:55 p.m. Tent:<\/p>\n
Dottie Peoples, who, with her “Peoples Choice Choir,” famously appeared with Widespread Panic at the first Bonnaroo nearly 20 years ago and put on such a blazing sit-in on “Tall Boy” and “Testify” that it made it on the festival’s DVD of festival standouts, is probably the gospel artist JamBase readers are most familiar with. Peoples was certainly one of the greatest gospel shows I saw throughout the weekend, and it served as the ideal lead-in to watching one of my all-time gospel-rooted soul singers closing off Saturday at the Blues Tent.<\/p>\n

Blues Mavis Staples 5:55 p.m. \u2013 6:55 p.m. Tent:<\/p>\n
While the cancellation of Melissa Etheridge due to COVID-19 was disappointing, the replacement of the iconic blues singer and guitarist with the matchless and irreplaceable Chicago great Mavis Staples was about as good a surprise as anybody could wish for. The 82-year-old singer’s performance was heavy on covers, and the enthusiastic audience returned the enthusiasm he brought to the Blues Tent. After a set that included her heartwarming original “Friendship,” a cover of Talking Heads gospel-tinged freakout “Slippery People” \u2013 a setlist staple of hers and The Staples Singers since shortly after the song’s release \u2013 Funkadelic’s “Can You Get To That,” Buffalo Springfield’s iconic “For What It’s Worth,” and The Staples Singers iconic hit single “I’ll Take You There” closed out the set We are fortunate to share space with Mavis, and I consider each chance to marvel at her brilliance, enthusiasm, and generally upbeat personality a wonderful privilege.<\/p>\n

Bites, Sights, and Lagniappe on Saturday<\/p>\n
Reports from the Fairgrounds were equally pleased about Erykah Badu’s Congo Square Stage headlining performance and Stevie Nicks<\/a> on the main stage, demonstrating the Fest’s overflowing wealth and the reality that harsh choices must be made when conflicts emerge. I’ve never been one to turn down a Mavis set, so things might be worse.<\/p>\n

R. Scully’s Rough Seven returned to the stage after a three-year sabbatical with a bruising rock show at BJ’s in the Bywater, which vocalist Ryan Scully now controls. Morning 40 Federation and RSR7, the group’s second band, would both perform at the Maple Leaf later in the weekend. They’ve long been one of the world’s most underappreciated bands, and despite the dust, they put up one of the greatest and most enjoyable shows of the weekend.<\/p>\n
