After completing the two music documentaries “Crossfire Hurricane” (about the Rolling Stones) and “Montage of Heck” in 2015, I felt ready to branch out into other fields, specifically non-biographical nonfiction. With these larger-than-life legacy performances in mind, I set out to create an immersive musical experience for IMAX and the theatre. We all know the basic facts about their careers according to Wikipedia; what I wanted to do was provide fans with a more personal and intimate way to connect with their favorite musicians, whether they listen to The Beatles, Bowie, Hendrix, or someone else entirely.

Early Life

On the 8th of January, 1947, David Robert Jones was born in Brixton, London. His mother, Margaret Mary “Peggy” (née Burns; 2 October 1913 – 2 April 2001), was a Kent native; she was born at Shorncliffe Army Camp. Her grandfather’s family came to Manchester from Ireland. She was a waitress at a theatre in Royal Tunbridge Wells, so that’s where we find her.

His father, Haywood Stenton “John” Jones (21 November 1912 – 5 August 1969),[6] was a promotions officer for the children’s charity Barnardo’s and hailed from Doncaster, Yorkshire. There was a family that called 40 Stansfield Road in Lambeth, south London, home. This address straddled the border between the neighborhoods of Brixton and Stockwell. Bowie went to Stockwell Infants School from the ages of three to six, where he had a reputation as a brilliant and focused kid—and a willful bully.

What Is Their First Band?

Who Is David Bowie?

In 1962, at the tender age of 15, Bowie founded his first band, the Konrads. The Konrads, including Underwood, was a local band who performed guitar-based rock & roll at weddings and other community events aimed toward young people.  In the year after Bowie dropped out of technical school, he told his parents he wanted to pursue a career in music. His mom found him a job as an electrician’s helper.

Bowie left the Konrads and joined the King Bees because he was unhappy with the band’s lack of ambition. “Do for us what Brian Epstein has done for the Beatles—and make another million,” he wrote to John Bloom, a prominent businessman in the washing machine industry. Despite Bloom’s lack of interest, it was because of his introduction to Dick James’s business partner, Leslie Conn, that Bowie was able to secure his first personal management contract.

Career and Their Personal Life

Who Is David Bowie?

In 1967, Bowie met dance instructor Lindsay Kemp and began taking classes from him at the London Dance Centre. His 1972 remark that meeting Kemp “truly flowered” his interest in the visual arts is indicative of this growth. “He was a fantastic role model since he was driven only by his feelings. His ordinary life was the most dramatic performance I’d ever witnessed. It embodied my expectations of what Bohemia might be like.

So, I decided to become a member of the circus.” In January 1968, Kemp utilized Bowie and dancer Hermione Farthingale in a dance scene for a BBC production, The Pistol Shot, in the Theatre 625 series; the two started dating and eventually moved in together in a London flat. Their relationship ended in the early months of 1969 when Farthingale left for Norway to appear in the film Song of Norway.
