This Year, 800,000 New Yorkers Will Be Able to Receive Additional Funds Through a Tax Credit Program

Almost 800,000 people in New York are expected to receive tax credits this year, according to city officials.

This Year’s Tax Credit Program

One of Mayor Eric Adams’ major policy victories for New York City’s low-income residents was the expansion of a tax credit program last year; this was the first such expansion in two decades. Adams’ latest State of the City address centered on his platform as a mayor who will fight for the city’s working class.

The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a tax credit program that provides financial assistance to low-income working individuals in the state of New York. The tax credit is available to families with yearly incomes of less than $80,000 and to individuals with annual incomes of less than $55,000.

Although the federal government is in charge of the program, the state and local governments can provide extra funds to help those who qualify.

The Adams administration successfully lobbied for and obtained state approval last year to increase the city’s yearly EITC obligation from about $100 million to $250 million, with the city agreeing to contribute an additional $100 million in a single payment.

More than 800,000 people, according to city authorities, will be eligible for the tax credit scheme this year. As the state’s contribution is only guaranteed for this year, it is unknown if the number of credits for eligible people will ever be this significant again. This increase in advantage is substantial.

Both the tax credit program and the free tax preparation services are highlighted in the campaign’s advertising.

The city will advertise its tax credit program and its free tax preparation services as part of a $1.5 million advertising push.

The advertisements will debut early on Saturday morning across many mediums, including traditional and digital media like television, radio, and social networking sites, and out-of-home displays like billboards.

In addition, they will provide their services through online streaming platforms like Netflix and Hulu. As the federal government has reduced its emergency pandemics aid, such as the increased child tax credit and extra food stamps, experts say this additional tax credit comes at a crucial moment.

“The data reveals that economic difficulties are way above what it was before COVID,” said James Parrott, director of economic and fiscal policies at the New School’s Center for New York City Affairs.

Parrott lauded Adams’s efforts to prolong the tax credit program and launch a public awareness campaign to urge eligible New Yorkers to get in touch with the city to file their taxes and claim the benefit.
