The United States and Russia’s Nuclear Armaments Deal Could Expire After 2026, According to Russia

The termination of the New START nuclear arms limitation agreement between Russia and the United States beyond the year 2026, according to Sergei Ryabkov, deputy foreign minister of Russia, is “quite plausible,” he said in an interview that was published on Monday.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said, “This is undoubtedly a plausible circumstance,” in an interview with the Russian Information Agency (RIA).

The New START pact, which is scheduled to expire in February 2026, was the subject of conversations between the United States and Russia in November 2022, but those talks abruptly ended. Future conversations cannot begin until both parties can agree on a date.
