The High Conduct Policy Office is Looking Into Two Incidents of Excessive Force by Jersey City Police This Past Weekend

An official with the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office stated that they are investigating two different instances that occurred over the weekend involving the Jersey City Police Department and whether or not they used excessive force.

Authorities responded to a report of a teenage girl being threatened with a firearm at Newport Centre Mall, leading to the arrest of at least one teenage boy, according to anonymous sources who talked to HCV on the condition of anonymity.

An officer and a juvenile, shown to be 16 in the video, can be seen trading blows before another teen resists being detained by police. The entire altercation was captured on a 16-second cell phone video published by HuffPost.

HudPost also shared a 90-second clip showing a man in a black sweater and red shorts being restrained by two police officers before a third officer hits him in the face.

Police appear to be keeping the suspect’s head down after wrestling him to the ground and eventually handcuffing him in the footage, which appears to show the suspect spitting in the officer’s face before punching the officer.

The scene of the crime was direct across the street from King’s Laundry (753 West Side Ave).

Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione, a spokesperson for the city, said she could not comment on the specifics while the investigation is ongoing, but she did say that Jersey City police officers had received significant training on the use of excessive force.

She wrote in an email that cops had received “extensive training for exactly these scenarios as part of our expanded training programs” to prevent the unnecessary use of force.

The instances are currently being investigated by a Force Unit set up by the Fulop administration to look into accusations of excessive use of force. We will not tolerate any further or more severe use of force, and that has been made quite clear.

The City has cooperated with the HCPO’s Office and provided all body camera footage, as is customary practice. While it is currently being evaluated, we will withhold judgment.
