Run-D:M:C: briefly disbanded in the late 1980s, then reformed in 1993 to produce a new album, Down with the King, before taking another hiatus. The band reformed in 2000 to record Crown Royal, which was followed by a tour.

Jam Master Jay was shot and died at his studio in Queens, New York, in 2002, and the group suffered a tragedy. Run-D.M.C. became the second rap group to be elected into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2009.
