Officer Who Hit Pedestrian While Responding to 911 in Jersey City to Reapply for Position

A cop in Jersey City who was dismissed after hitting a pedestrian while responding to a call last year says he will pursue legal action to reinstate his position.

For striking a man who raced across Jersey Avenue between automobiles stalled at a traffic light on February 8, 2022, in Liberty State Park, Officer Edwin Hernandez was terminated from the force on Monday after about six years on the job.

Attorney Michael Rubas said, “Jersey City’s decision to dismiss an officer over an accident is just plain wrong.” We’re positive that Officer Hernandez’s dismissal will be overturned and he’ll be rehired.

Real Garden State posted dashcam footage to Instagram showing Hernandez swerving into oncoming traffic while driving south on the Jersey Avenue bridge.

A guy named Douglas Salom, who was identified in court documents, ran into the street in front of Hernandez as he drove past the cars waiting for the light to change. Salom was struck by Hernandez and thrown into the sidewalk.

According to those in the know, Hernandez went to the Manning Avenue scene of the auto theft while at Jersey City Medical Center. The crash left Salom with a broken leg, and the source claims that Hernandez and his girlfriend helped him before calling for an ambulance.

According to the source, Hernandez was never cited by the department and kept his full-time job after the incident.

The news of Hernandez’s dismissal reportedly came as a shock to him. The termination this week came as a shock to the source, who claimed that excessive speed and seriously injuring the victim were among the reasons given for the dismissal.

When asked for a reaction to Hernandez’s dismissal, Jersey City officials remained silent. Officials from the police union were similarly unavailable for comment. According to the source, appeals for terminations like Hernandez’s are often filed with the Civil Service Commission.

As of Friday afternoon, a GoFundMe page set up to aid Hernandez following his dismissal had garnered nearly $35,000.

SafeStreetsJC’s Colin DeVries drew parallels between Hernandez’s accident and the now-famous hit-and-run by Councilwoman Amy DeGise and claimed the city was using double standards.

In a July incident, Denise ran a red light and hit a cyclist who was crossing against traffic. She didn’t call the police until six hours later. She pleaded guilty earlier this year and was hit with a $5,000 fine and a one-year restriction of her driving privileges.

Because of the way Amy DeGise was treated differently than others, “people may think that there isn’t a lot of accountability and you’re not going to get in as much trouble,” said DeVries.

Here, it appears that the police officer who stopped to help is being punished worse than Amy DeGise was when he was fired. That’s it; he can no longer work for the JCPD,” he went on. Yet, Denise remains present.

Even Elvin Dominici, who ran for the at-large council seats in 2021 but lost to Denise instead, felt this way.

A person “who is not politically connected in Jersey City pays a price and gets the full power of the justice (system), sometimes unfairly in this case with Hernandez,” he said. But if you have political clout, nothing bad will happen to you.

Salom is suing the city and police officer Hernandez for “careless, dangerous, and negligent” driving. Salom allegedly sustained several permanent injuries, according to the lawsuit, and will need ongoing medical care.
