First Time the Family of the 6-year-old Accused of Shooting a Teacher Has Spoken Out.

The family of the 6-year-old kid accused of shooting a Virginia elementary school teacher is coming out for the first time.

The family said, “firearm our son accessed was secured.”

On Jan. 6, the unnamed 6-year-old allegedly took a handgun from his home, put it in his bag, and carried it to Richneck Elementary School in Newport News. Police said he “intentionally” shot and wounded 25-year-old teacher Abigail Zwerner in a first-grade classroom.

Police say the boy’s mother legitimately bought the 9 mm Taurus firearm.

“Our family has always been devoted to proper gun ownership and keeping firearms out of the reach of youngsters,” the 6-year-representative old’s said.

The family stated they were working with local and federal law enforcement to figure out what transpired.

Investigations continue without charges. Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew said Wednesday that school pupils will be interviewed next week. He did not say when the investigation would end or if charges would be made.

The gunfire hurt none of the 16–20 pupils in the room, officials added.

Police said Zwerner led her students out of the classroom after being shot. Drew called her a “hero” who “saved lives.”

The 6-year-family old’s said, “Our son’s teacher selflessly served our son and the school’s youngsters. We wish for her healing after such a terrible incident. She worked hard and compassionately to help us find the finest education and learning environment for our son.”

“His mother or father attended school with him and accompanied him to class every day,” the family added. “We missed him the week of the shooting. We will always regret missing this day.”

The family reported the 6-year-old is hospitalized.

“We continue to pray for his teacher’s full recovery, and for her loved ones who are obviously shocked and anxious,” the family stated. “We love our kid and ask that you pray for him and our family.”

Riverside Health System said Thursday that Zwerner was released from the hospital early this week and will continue outpatient treatment.

“She recovers as an outpatient with family, friends, and health professionals,” the statement stated.

Thursday’s letter from Richneck school administrator Karen Lynch informed parents that the school will be closed next week.

“Thank you for your patience as we spend this time ensuring safety precautions are handled before school reopens,” she wrote in the letter.
