Even though it’s an annual event, it’s not just another food holiday (there’s at least one for every day). The Salvation Army sent ladies armed with coffee and baked goods to the front lines in France during World War I in an effort to promote morale among the troops. National Doughnut Day was established in 1938 by the Salvation Army in honor of the women.
Several businesses in the Rochester area are offering discounts, freebies, and specials to commemorate the occasion. It’s best to get there early because they only have a limited supply. On Friday, June 3, Krispy Kreme, Duck Donuts, Dunkin’, Early Bird Donuts, Raleigh’s Burney’s Sweets & More, and other local doughnut shops will be giving out freebies and discounts in honor of National Doughnut Day.
