A group of senators from both parties in the United States introduced a bill on Tuesday that would make it illegal to use the Chinese social networking app TikTok within the country.
Some people in the United States are concerned that ByteDance, the owner of a popular video-sharing app, may be using the app to spy on its users or censor its content, so this development puts even more pressure on the company.

A press statement from Rubio’s office states that the bill would prevent doing business with any social media corporation located in or controlled by a “nation of concern,” such as China or Russia.
To safeguard American users from TikTok, the federal government “has yet to take a single substantial measure,” the Florida senator said in a statement.
This isn’t about making funny videos, it’s about an app that routinely gathers information on tens of millions of people across the United States.
According to the press release, Representatives Mike Gallagher (R-Wisconsin) and Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Illinois) introduced a similar bill in the House of Representatives.
In a statement, Gallagher described TikTok as “digital fentanyl” that is “addicting Americans,” gathering vast amounts of data from them and filtering the news.
On Tuesday night, a spokesman for TikTok sent a statement to USA TODAY in which they called the proposed legislation “politically driven” and urged lawmakers to wait until the completion of the security review of TikTok before passing new regulations.

TikTok spokesperson Brooke Oberwetter said, “TikTok is adored by millions of Americans who use the platform to study, expand their companies, and interact with creative material that brings them joy.”

Holden Triplett, the co-founder of Trenchcoat Advisors and a former FBI official who worked in Beijing in counterintelligence, told the Associated Press that while it is debatable whether the Chinese government is actively collecting TikTok data, the app presents a clear vulnerability.
ByteDance, the business that owns TikTok, is based in China, therefore it must comply with any requests from the Chinese government for information, including the whereabouts and contact details of its employees.
Director of the FBI Christopher Wray stated last month that he is “very concerned” that Beijing could weaponize data obtained through TikTok, citing the company’s operations in the United States as a source of worry.

Reuters said that TikTok had been in talks with the U.S. government’s Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S. for months in an effort to negotiate an agreement to secure app users’ data.
After an earlier attempt by President Trump’s administration to outlaw the app was thwarted, this new bill is welcome news.
Some governments, such as South Dakota and Maryland, have lately taken action to prevent the app from being used on state-owned computers and mobile devices.
