A Rare Tornado in New Jersey Leaves Extensive Damage and Displaces 100 People

Officials confirmed Wednesday that an EF-2 tornado touched down in New Jersey on Tuesday, destroying trees, damaging homes, and displacing approximately 100 individuals.

The National Weather Service reported that the tornado struck Mercer County at 3:35 p.m. It was the first February twister to strike New Jersey since 1999 and the fifth since 1950.

The tornado produced speeds of up to 115 mph, making it one of the strongest ever documented in the state’s history while lasting only approximately six minutes.

The line of destruction left by the tornado as it roared through the central New Jersey county was straight. The NWS reported that buildings and trees fell from a residential portion of the county through a park and into a golf course.

“Fortunately, no casualties were recorded despite the extensive damage to houses, buildings, automobiles, and the environment, including our Mercer Oaks golf course,” said county executive Brian Hughs.

The Lawrence Square Village neighborhood sustained the most damage, according to the county.

Chris Longo, the chief of police for Lawrence Township, told CBS that as many as 100 people had been affected by the uncommon cyclone.

Longo uploaded footage of the extensive damage to a Lawrence Square Village apartment complex, where 27 units were rendered unusable.

The streets were lined with debris and bushes while responders attempted to remove the debris.

County officials anticipate that cleanup work will continue for the remainder of the week.
